Cound
Dedicated to St Peter because of its mediaeval associations with the Abbey of St Peter in Shrewsbury, the building dates primarily from the13th century. In the 19th century parts were rebuilt in response to the great Anglo Catholic revival. In 2016 Cound Church celebrates an amazing 800 years of Ministry at the church.
DOOM PAINTING CONSERVATION APPEAL
Few Doom paintings remain because they were damaged or lime washed following the Reformation but there was also a Victorian enthusiasm for stripping old plaster.
Our Doom was discovered during an intensive program of restoration 1889-91 fortunately it survived until 1988 when it was professionally conserved.
This C15th painting at one time would have covered the whole of the top of the chancel wall, with Christ in the middle and heaven and hell on either side.
A small part of the rainbow is visible near the heavily over-painted cross.
Our Lady and souls near Saint Peter can be seen with some interesting architecture of the Holy Mansions set within a walled city.
A conservation project is imminent with costs estimated to be in the region of £50,000 Events will be held to raise money for this and your support would be much appreciated.
