A place made sacred by lives & prayers for a millennium & beyond

The Parish Church of Holy Trinity, Much Wenlock

Much Wenlock Parish Church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and is a place made sacred by lives and prayers for over a millennium and beyond. The first church on this site was Anglo-Saxon, built probably about AD 680.

Patron St Milburga

St Milburga, granddaughter of Penda, King of Mercia, was Abbess of Wenlock Abbey, an Anglo-Saxon religious community with separate enclosures for monks and nuns.

On the site of Holy Trinity Church in around AD 680 she built the Nuns’ Church, which after many adventures and some rebuilding became the first Holy Trinity Parish Church.

Of that church nothing now remains above ground, and the present Parish Church you see from the Priory ruins was built in the 12th century by the Cluniac monks of Wenlock Priory.

St Milburga in the Orthodox Tradition is remembered at the Divine Liturgy on 23rd February using these words:

Rejoice, all you faithful, for today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Princess and Abbess Milburga!

Rejoice! Today the Holy Abbess calls to us the path of virtue.

Rejoice! Today the Wise Milburga opens the Book of the Scriptures, kindling our hearts, with the words of wisdom.

Rejoice! Today the Light of Mercia guides to the true Faith, those seeking salvation.

Rejoice! Today the Saint of Shropshire visits homes and parishes, nurturing the flame of the love of God.

Rejoice! Today the Holy Princess consoles the afflicted; comforts the fearful and heals the sick.

Rejoice! With psalms of thanksgiving, let us follow the Abbess of Wenlock, singing psalms of thanksgiving, to Christ our Saviour.

O all Venerable Lady, dwelling now in the Palace of the Father, guide us through the storms of this world to our eternal Home.

Amen.

The church is open daily during daylight hours for visitors and for private prayer.

The + Blessed Sacrament + is reserved in the Lady Chapel

We also have a dedicated area for private prayer with a candle stand and prayer board for you to leave your prayer for others to offer.
